I’ve descended into a shaping frenzy… 3 more boards going through at the moment, another diamond tail, a double wing pin and a bat tail… all Evo3s…
Pic below is of the double wing pin for Anthony who is coming off a conventional shortboard that he used to ride in Cape Town… and now needs something more suited to English waves with heaps of glide and natural speed… so the double wing pin was to provide a nice wide stable wave catching platform that would glide through the flat spots and slow sections but with a highly manoeuvrable pulled in tail…
Finally got Oli’s board finished and he was pretty chuffed with it…
6’8 x 21 1/2 x 2 3/8 Bonzer Inspired Evo3, double concave channel into single concave into V nose. Low entry rocker with medium lift in the tail.
Design, shaping, glassing, pinlines and artwork by Tim Stafford. Hot coat, sanding, gloss and polish at the Foam Asylum
I was lucky enough this last week to start shaping a surfboard for my good friend Oli. It has been over 20 years since I last picked up the planer, but inspired by the website we are currently developing for Nigel Semmens I jumped back into the foam dust with vigour. I am pleased to say that the shape came out pretty well – although the proof is in the eating – which Oli will no doubt supply in a couple of week’s time!
Watch this space…
The board is a Bonzer 3 with a twist – the fins have a shortened base, with more depth and rake – an adaptation I have made to suit the way I like them to ride whilst keeping that abundance of speed off the bottom… The double concave is more channelled through the bottom yet shallower, and then flattens behind the rear fin… Hopefully this will be finished by the time Malcolm Campbell (innovator and my inspiration for all things Bonzer) arrives in the UK so I can get to discuss these changes with the master.
The glass job is currently scheduled for later this week – and I plan to get messy with a resin tint followed by pinlines with some custom artwork on the bottom (and fins of course) … more later :)
Big thanks to Nigel, Phil and Chris who provided the odd tip, tools, support, (no coffee), the Ocean Magic surfboard factory shaping bay… and only the odd wry smile as I struggled with a proud stringer!!
Thanks also to Oli for having the faith in me to make him a board…
Well as if Cornwall estate agents hadn't hit the bottom of the credibility list with their persistent high valuations in the face of a declining market, they have now started to apply retail marketing techniques to try and drum up some business! How long before it's "buy one get one free" ?www.strattoncreber.co.uk
Well my Sammy took the plunge and graduated from one of the flock to the Shepherd... he ordered his 6'4" high performance Bonzer from Nigel Semmens Custom Surfboards - Ocean Magic Surfboard Factory, Newquay Cornwall this week... just in time for 7 months in Indonesia!
It looks like its a beauty... he's going for egg yolk yellow tint with black pin-lines (now where have I seen that before, LOL), a double 4oz deck, 4oz bottom. Bonzer will be written onto the nose - the tribute to Malcolm Campbell. Its going to have a narrow fishy swallow tail and a lot of high performance modern stuff - rails, rocker, foil etc.
Its nice to know that all those wet summer days on Red Flag at Booby's Bay talking about boards weren't wasted :)
Have a great trip Sammy - may your stalls set you deep, and your roundhouses
rebound...
Bon voyage mon ami.
Well having sold 4 boards this summer I've gone and undone all that good work by ordering a Mandala Blueberry Fish for collection on the way to Mexico for waves and cervezas in January with Vicky and our good friends Steve and Kate from LA. been thinking about fish for a while and the quad combo from Mandala seemed like an interesting one to try... and of course the added bonus that I get a Moonlight Glassing tint-job :) In the words of Sam Jones - "Happy Days"
Recently a new residents committee was formed in my village, Trevone, called TaWRA (Trevone and Windmill Residents Committee) and in my spare time I knocked up a couple of logos - after all everyone organisation needs an identity. I thought I'd pop the designs on here for the committee to see, and if anyone else sees them their opinions would be very welcome too. :)
For those who don't know Trevone its a quaint little village by the sea in North Cornwall - most of us who live there think it's the most beautiful village in Cornwall, full stop. One of its distinctive features is a round crater like hole in the headland which was created by a massive cave collapse, this landmark together with the Madrips rocks are incorporated into both designs... anyways, replies, opinions, likes and dislikes most gratefully received.
PS Fonts, colours, etc all up for grabs this is just a first stab. We could always print tee-shirts etc to try and raise some money too.
