It has been over 20 years since I last picked up the planer, but inspired by the website we are currently developing for Nigel Semmens I jumped back into the foam dust with vigour. I am pleased to say that the shape came out pretty well – although the proof is in the eating – which Oli will no doubt supply in a couple of week’s time!

Watch this space…

The board is a Bonzer 3 with a twist – the fins have a shortened base, with more depth and rake – an adaptation I have made to suit the way I like them to ride whilst keeping that abundance of speed off the bottom… The double concave is more channelled through the bottom yet shallower, and then flattens behind the rear fin… Hopefully this will be finished by the time Malcolm Campbell (innovator and my inspiration for all things Bonzer) arrives in the UK so I can get to discuss these changes with the master.

The glass job is currently scheduled for later this week – and I plan to get messy with a resin tint followed by pinlines with some custom artwork on the bottom (and fins of course) … more later :)

Big thanks to Nigel, Phil and Chris who provided the odd tip, tools, support, (no coffee), the Ocean Magic surfboard factory shaping bay… and only the odd wry smile as I struggled with a proud stringer!!

Thanks also to Oli for having the faith in me to make him a board…

Shaped by Malcolm Campbell, after much deliberation on the final design, she then headed from Ventura over to Moonlight Glassing in San Diego where Pete and Sally worked their wonders and turned the shapers art into a visual master piece. The board together with my Mandala Blueberry Fish were picked up by my friend Tim Elsner and Phil, who made the pilgrimage up to Malcolm's via Steve Jacobi, who will be bringing the boards down to Baja where we finally meet for the first time....

Here's what Tim had to say "Yo Scrappy! I just got home from a pilgrimage to Bonzer Land. We set up a tag team effort to get your boards. Yesterday my friend Phil (he will be pictured in the next email) picked up your boards from Moonlight. Then he came up to my house this morning and we transferred the boards into my car and hooked up with Steve outside of LA on our way to Malcolm's house. Phil had a Bonzer ready to be picked up that was glassed up there in Ventura. Malcolm wanted to get some photos of your board so we brought it up with us. Steve ordered a new board, Phil picked his up and I saw my new 7'4" cut out of a blank. Your board looks great. Tim"

Malcolm loves the board too which is awesome. Seems this board is embodying everything a surfboard should before its even got into the water... peace, love and harmony. Thanks to all.

Many residents turned out to say their farewells to something that was an important part of the fabric of the village community. Thanks to all those who turned up, thanks to TaWRA for organising the get together, and finally the biggest thanks to Julie and Ian who kept the Post Office going for so long.

Technorati Tags: TaWRA,Trevone,Cornwall,Post Office Closure

Shepherd at last...

Well my Sammy took the plunge and graduated from one of the flock to the Shepherd... he ordered his 6'4" high performance Bonzer from Nigel Semmens Custom Surfboards - Ocean Magic Surfboard Factory, Newquay Cornwall this week... just in time for 7 months in Indonesia!

It looks like its a beauty... he's going for egg yolk yellow tint with black pin-lines (now where have I seen that before, LOL), a double 4oz deck, 4oz bottom. Bonzer will be written onto the nose - the tribute to Malcolm Campbell. Its going to have a narrow fishy swallow tail and a lot of high performance modern stuff - rails, rocker, foil etc.

Its nice to know that all those wet summer days on Red Flag at Booby's Bay talking about boards weren't wasted :)

Have a great trip Sammy - may your stalls set you deep, and your roundhouses

Technorati Tags: Bonzer,Malcolm Campbell,surfboards,5 fin,resin tint,Ocean Magic,Nigel Semmens,Phil Clifford

rebound...

Bon voyage mon ami.

Technorati Tags: bonzer,ns boards,surfboards,nigel semmens

Wetter the better

I know I'm a surfer and I'm meant to like it wet but this is ridiculous. We have had some epic surf in between all the mizzle and north westerly wind swell and I have to say the Bumble Bee has been flying... so much so I have ordered another Bonzer to join the quiver.

Silly season has been pretty par for the course with the usual emit behaviour provoking the odd outburst but it been very quiet overall.

We have been busy at the office too with several new clients coming on stream for new sites by the end of the year or in the new Year. One client is taking me back to my roots, www.nsboards.co.uk Nigel Semmens Surfboards... the man at the machine is none other than my personal mentor and surf guru Phil Clifford who taught me how to tape a rail, scrape a pinline, mix resin, lay up a fin, do a solid bottom turn, and not be scared to be different - thanks Phil.

Anyways, more another time...
